Turn revolutionary chronology into an argument about ideas, power, and limits
If you missed Enlightenment questions, stop memorizing philosophers as isolated names. Tie each thinker to a political problem: Locke to natural rights and consent, Montesquieu to divided authority, and revolutionary declarations to the question of who counted as a rights-bearing citizen.
For Atlantic Revolution questions, build a four-column comparison for the American, French, Haitian, and Latin American cases: leadership, immediate grievance, social order challenged, and post-revolution outcome. That prevents the common mistake of treating political independence as the same thing as social equality.
When a source uses words such as liberty, nation, citizen, or equality, ask who the author includes in that political community and who remains excluded. That sourcing move is especially useful for women, enslaved people, free people of color, Indigenous communities, and propertyless men.
